SDG 1 in Brazil

End poverty in all its forms everywhere

Data from the 2030 AGENDA FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT SPOTLIGHT REPORT 2022 BRAZIL SYNTHESIS show that the 168 goals of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations (UN) originally applicable to the country were evaluated – including the seven that from 2021 onwards will be considered in the Panel SDG Brazil as “not applicable” – only one had satisfactory progress.

Target Classification (SDG 1)

1.1 By 2030, eradicate extreme poverty for all people everywhere, currently measured as people living on less than $1.90 a daySETBACK
1.2 By 2030, reduce at least by half the proportion of men, women and children of all ages living in poverty in all its dimensions according to national definitionsSETBACK
1.3 Implement nationally appropriate social protection systems and measures for all, including floors, and by 2030 achieve substantial coverage of the poor and the vulnerableAT RISK
1.4 By 2030, ensure that all people, in particular the poor and the vulnerable, have equal rights to economic resources, as well as access to basic services, ownership and control over land and other forms of property, inheritance, natural resources, appropriate new technology and financial services, including microfinanceSETBACK
1.5 By 2030, build the resilience of the poor and those in vulnerable situations and reduce their exposure and vulnerability to climate-related extreme events and other economic, social and environmental shocks and disastersSETBACK
1.a Ensure significant mobilization of resources from a variety of sources, including through enhanced development cooperation, in order to provide adequate and predictable means for developing countries, in particular least developed countries, to implement programmes and policies to end poverty in all its dimensionsSETBACK
1.b : Create sound policy frameworks at the national, regional and international levels, based on pro-poor and gender-sensitive development strategies, to support accelerated investment in poverty eradication actionsSETBACK

  • Repeal Constitutional Amendment 95, thereby guaranteeing basic rights and dignified living conditions for all people;
  • Establish a viable Permanent Basic Income and improve the budgets of the Unified Social Assistance System (SUAS), Social Security and Health;
  • Restart the Bolsa Família programme, adjusting its eligibility criteria to ensure it is universally accessible and available to all vulnerable and marginalised groups;
  • Review labour and social security policies and restore social protection provisions removed from the national Labour Laws (CLT) and the Federal Constitution;
  • Build a progressive tax system through fair and solidary tax reform;
  • Subsidise, through effective public policy, at local and regional levels, groups bringing together governments, the private sector, universities and civil society to establish strategies promoting food security, employment and income generation, and reduce territorial socioeconomic vulnerability;
  • Establish programmes to prevent rural violence and protect traditional peoples and communities, and improve public policies combating inequality through the support of sustainable and innovative local production arrangements;
  • Allocate sufficient budgetary resources for climate adaptation and resilience, including risk management and disaster prevention and response, especially for populations of greater socio-economic vulnerability
